Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors

The Palm Springs Public Library, Brothers of the Desert, and Mizell Center have teamed up once again to present the second annual “Our Voices Our Stories: Celebrating Black Authors,” a FREE community event in celebration of Black History Month on Sunday, February 8th, from 10 AM – 1:00 PM. RSVP HERE.

This event will begin with a welcome reception featuring a variety of bagels and spreads, coffee, and mimosas from 10-10:30 AM. The Best Bookstore in Palm Springs will be on hand with select books from our featured authors, available for purchase. At 10:30 AM, the event will begin with our first featured author, former NFL Player RK Russell, in conversation with Lorenzo Taylor. They will be discussing Russell’s Memoir “The Yards Between Us”, an exploration of his journey as he shattered barriers and made history by becoming the first openly active NFL player to identify as bisexual. On a day that is dedicated to the ultimate face-off in football, the Super Bowl, Russell will talk about his career as a formidable defensive end when he played for the Dallas Cowboys and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he faced off against Hall of Famers and the fiercest competitors with unmatched skill and determination. With the mainstream popularity of the HBOMax series “Heated Rivalry,” which has resonated with audiences who aren’t part of the LGBTQ community, transcending stereotypes about pro athletes and the gay community, Russell will share his own story and let you decide.

Following RK Russell, our second featured author will be Toni Ann Johnson in conversation with Marilyn F. Solomon. They will discuss her soon-to-be-released book “But Where’s Home?” (to be released February 10, 2026), which is a Novella and linked short story collection that lays bare the realities of Black life in America, challenging readers to confront issues of racism, classism, colonized thinking, narcissism, abuse, and parent-child relationships. Johnson’s complex and interwoven characters create a kaleidoscope of truths about human nature and the complicated relationship the United States has with race. They will touch on her career as a screenwriter, playwright, and author of other books, including “Light Skin Gone to Waste”, “Homecoming”, and “Remedy for a Broken Angel”.

Artist Bio (David Maurice Jones)

David Maurice Jones is a sixty-one-year-old Chicagoan who moved to the Coachella Valley six years ago. One of his greatest life blessings was being a Peace Corps Volunteer, and years later, continuing his travels around the world for work, study, volunteerism, or just an everyday vacation. Witnessing how people culturally express their experiences, identity, spirituality, beliefs, dreams, and joys – for themselves, their families, and their communities intrigues him. Individual markings on floors of shrines, symbols on church stairways, pictures on headstones or monuments, geometric formations on walls, designs on clothes, etc., all help an individual or group convey personal meanings of day-to-day life. David is intrigued by symbols, patterns, and shapes, and strives to use them in his art to depict ideas, plants, animals, and nature.

Mini Pop-Up: Nocturnal Life

I love the night – the stillness, the crisp air that’s a reprieve from the heat of the day, a silence that is only broken by melodies of nature: leaves in the wind, waves lapping against each other or the shore, a bird chirp from a great distance. The pseudorealism pieces of this pop-up exhibit – drawn in black, archival ink set against a heavy, white watercolor paper – show my favorite time of darkness, well after the sun has set, yet still long before it returns. For each piece, I start with a treasured thought of nature – that comes from a dream, a noted passage, a hope shared with a friend, a need for my future – and begin with a loose, but recognizable sketch of a respite moment. With slow, patient breaths and sometimes unfocused hand motions, I fill in the image. Details are sometimes exactly what one might expect. Often, they are only a concept of what might be. Each image is the sum of a crowded pattern of notations that I hope takes viewers on a special, personal reflection of what might be in the depicted moment.

Black History Month Parade

Join Brothers of the Desert in celebration of Black History Month, the Palm Springs Black History Committee, (PSBHC) and the City of Palm Springs are proud to announce the 39th Annual City of Palm Springs Black History Month Parade and Town Fair.

The 2026 national theme is: “A Century of Black History Commemorations” — honoring the legacy of Carter G. Woodson, who launched Negro History Week in the 1920s, which later evolved into Black History Month as we know it today. This month is a time to celebrate the resilience, achievements, culture, and historic contributions of African Americans.

Brothers of the Desert is invited to be a part of this vibrant celebration by joining our 2026 Black History Month Parade.

The parade will take place along Palm Canyon Drive in downtown Palm Springs, beginning at Baristo Road and ending at Amado Road. The parade route is approximately one mile long, making it an enjoyable and walkable experience for participants and spectators alike. Immediately following the parade, we invite you to enjoy the Town Fair at Downtown Park, located near the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Community Food Bank at the Center

  • The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Brothers of the Desert has partnered with Social Cafe and Play Lounge in Palm Springs to collect non-perishable food for our local Community Food Bank at the Center.

Did you know?

One in seven Coachella Valley adults has had to cut the size of meals or skip meals because they couldn’t afford food, according to a 2022 HARC survey. That equates to 48,670 food-insecure residents.

The Center’s Community Food Bank provides fresh and free food through its weekly distribution, including produce, protein, dairy, baked goods, and pantry items to food-insecure community members.

The Community Food Bank serves anyone experiencing food insecurity, not only the LGBTQ+ population.

The community supports the food bank through volunteering and donations of cash and food. Last year, the community donated more than 64,000 pounds of food to the Community Food Bank!

The Center’s Community Food Bank serves more than 500 households each week, representing over 1,200 people. In the past year, the Community Food Bank served nearly 16,000 households, representing over 35,000 individuals.

Beyond food, recipients gain improved health and well-being through a better diet and personalized referrals to additional services that move individuals and families toward greater stability.
